Title: Stone Guardians: Obsidian

Author: Ellie Potts
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:
This is a different take on the vampire mythos.

Long before man there were Stone Guardians, a race of immortal warriors who sat beside Goddess. Isobel is different, she is an illegal bound servant. Not human or Guardian, she is vampire. Last of her kind, kept hidden by her Guardian master Vilem of the Obsidian Clan. Youngest son to Ivy who is responsible for the uprising that tore the Stone Guardians into two factions. One who still worship the Goddess, and the other who defies her.

Isobel has seen a lot throughout her many years with Vilem. She has learned with great minds, taught by teachers who live in history books. But she is truly happy when she sings. Now she is the head singer of the local rock band À La Mode. Her band consist of her closest friends, who are fourth generation Guardians. As uninvited visitors show up and threaten Isobel’s life. She has to play the good little Guardian while her world unwinds.

Ellie Potts is a self-published multi-genre writer. She loves everything nerdy like dressing for pirate and renaissance faires, Steampunk, playing video games, planning to survive a zombie apocalypse, being a Whovian, Browncoat, Star Wars addict, and collector of arcane knowledge. She grew up in Merced County where most of her stories and books take place. She now lives in Tulare County with her husband, an attack Bugg, Darth Turtle, two spoiled goats, and a bunch of creepy chickens.

Chapter 1
Isobel gripped the microphone and let the rhythm of the music take over. On cue, her mouth opened and she began to sing; softly at first then louder as the drums and the bass guitar came in. She opened her eyes and heard the people nearest the stage gasp. It was the white contacts, but they weren’t part of her overall costume. The powdered oversized hairdo and  heavy make-up with pink accents plus the tight, hot pink, silk, brocade bodice, the matching short pannier  skirt with fringe and matching heels all fit her French rock band À La Mode’s look.
Their music was gothic rock with a touch of 70’s glam. As Isobel sang, she made love to the microphone. People left their shows excited and turned on, which added to the vibe of the crowd. She shut out the world and released all of her pain and agony when she sang. Toby played drums behind her, wearing his own oversized wig and a pair of tight pants. His body was powdered and adorned with piercings and tattoos.  On her left was Johnny who played guitar and on her right was Jenny, Johnny’s twin, who played bass. Both dressed in high French eighteenth century fashion with a modern twist.
When the set was done, Toby got up and went to Isobel, holding out his hand. She gave a slight curtsy, took his hand, and bounded off the stage followed by the twins. Their groupies oooed and aahed around them as they made their way to the bar.
“Madame,” Toby said, pulling out the barstool.
“Merci, mon cher,” she replied, sitting down.
“Isobel,” a man called, making her turn.  “Will you take a picture with me?”
She looked him over. He was dressed in the usual Goth attire; black and more black. “Why, yes,” she replied and got up from the stool.  He pulled her close, and she put on a fake smile as he snapped a selfie.
She kissed his cheeks then shooed him away. Other fans began asking her questions, mostly about the group’s eyes. The twins had burnt orange colored eyes, and Toby’s were sky blue. Eyes of their family line. When Isobel left the house she had to wear her silver contacts to cover her brown eyes. She smiled, she laughed, and she teased them sensually, as was her way.  Finally she sat at the bar. Toby removed the wig.
“The usual?” Roy the bartender asked.
They all nodded.
“You didn’t have to take that picture,” Jenny said.
“Oh, but did you see his ruffles?” she smiled and tried to hide her teeth as much as possible. She had used much of the energy she had, and she was hungry. “I’ll be back. I need to use the restroom.”
“I’ll go,” Jenny said.
“No, it’s okay. I need to call Vilem anyway.”
Roy set down a pitcher and four glasses. She managed to make it to the bathroom on legs that didn’t feel steady. Something was off. She flipped down the toilet seat and dug out the vials hiding in her bodice. She usually only needed one but pulled out both; tonight, she needed a double shot. She popped the cork, tilted the vial, and let the warm red liquid slide down her throat. The copper essence filled her senses.
She finished the one then looked at the other vial. She popped the top and slammed it back as if taking a shot. Her energy returned quickly, but something was still wrong. She looked at the stall, not really thinking as she looked over the graffiti: Samantha was here, John’s a dick, and her favorite, I love bacon.
She flushed the toilet and went to the sinks. A trickle of blood had run down the side of her mouth. She licked at it quickly before anyone could see.
She threw the empty vials in the trash and washed her hands. She left the bathroom and made her way back to her friends. They were discussing their playlist for tomorrow.
“How is Vilem?” Toby asked as she took her seat.
“Being Vilem.”
“My father would flay me if I called him by his given name,” Johnny said.
“Vilem never seems to mind,” Jenny said.
Toby poured her a beer. She took her glass and guzzled the drink. “Always the lady,” Toby said. “You all right?”
“I’m fine.”
Roy came back with the bar phone. “Izzy, your father is on the phone.”
“You didn’t bring your phone?” Toby asked.
“I forgot,” she said and took the phone. “Father?” She listened quietly. “I forgot it. I know. Yes.”
“Well, what did your father want?” Jenny asked.
“You are the only girl I know who hates cell phones,” Johnny said.
“Vilem wants me home. He received word of relatives coming to visit.”
Toby choked on his beer. She looked at him as he cleaned himself with a napkin. She looked at the twins; their eyes were wide staring at her.
“What?” she finally asked.
“You do know that your relatives don’t believe in our way.”
She shook her head. “Vilem has told me very little of our relatives.”
“You need to have him tell you about them before we say anything more.” Jenny put her cup down, her hand shaking slightly.  She was scared. Izzy had known them for over one hundred years, and Jenny only shook when she was frightened.
“Why are you scared?”
Jenny shot her daggers. “I am not scared. I am a guardian.”
“Look, let us enjoy the night,” Toby said.
“Excuse me,” a man said, and they all turned to look at him. He was tall and lean and had muscles where they counted. He wore a tight pair of pants and a loose fitting shirt. “Toby, I am a huge fan. I want to buy you a drink.”
“I would love that. And what is your name?”
“Jorge,” he said, clearly nervous.
“Well, Jorge, sit here next to me and let us have that drink.” Toby spewed sexual mojo causing Isobel to roll her eyes and turn back to her drink.
“We may have another problem,” Johnny said, looking towards the door.
Izzy closed her eyes. She had sensed the darkness as it came in. Blood, sex, frustration, and anger; most of the dark guardians wore the scent as if it was their only skin. She sat straight up on her stool. She knew who had come in even before looking. He was heading straight for her. Aengus always walked with a purpose. He had an air about him, as if he owned everything and everyone in his path.  He wanted to own her. His shoulder length black hair made his skin luminous, which made his maroon eyes glow with evil darkness.
He was closely followed by his cronies. All wore black, had ebony colored hair and wore white makeup.  They looked the part of traditional vampires, but they were far more sinister. All of them, except for one, were guardians, dark stone guardians at that. They lived only on human blood.
All stone guardians lived off of blood but the light guardians, who still lived by the Goddess, consumed only animal blood. Dark stone guardians defied the Goddess and drank human blood, since she valued them more than any other creature. Human blood had made them dangerous and a bit insane throughout the years, and with each generation, it seemed to get worse.
Aengus stopped in front of her. “I missed your band. I apologize.”
“Accepted, now please leave,” she said.
“It is moon. I am free and bound to court you. Will you accept my offer?” He leaned in. The darkness that clung to him always called to something deep inside her. Yet she could not stand the man.
“Again, I will pass. You might want to court one of your own kind.”
“But you are my kind,” he bent down, whispering against her ear. “I know you feel it. I have seen it in your eyes.  Be my bride.  I will show you such pleasures, and you will never look back.”
“No thank you,” she said.
“I am then calling you to circle,” he said, pulling away. “I have talked to the council. You are expected in an hour, since you did not accept my proposal.” He turned and left with his group.
Izzy stared after him. “Trouble,” she said, her French accent heavy as the others stared at her. What they did not know was that she was speaking to Vilem.
Fear bit into her. She had opened the tie to Vilem. Aengus has made a blood challenge.  In an hour, she whispered to him in her head. She looked around at her friends.
“It is okay to be frightened,” Jenny said.
“I would have wet myself,” Johnny said.
“Plead to the council,” Toby said, taking her hands. “He has no reason to call you into challenge. Plead to the council.”
“We should get going,” she said, still in shock. She could feel the feelings of others, anger and more fear.  She looked around the bar and listened to the beating hearts. The smell of blood in their veins called to her.
Humans. They had no idea how easy they had it. She had been alive for over six hundred years. Tobias, from what she remembered, was two hundred years younger than her. The twins were going on four hundred years old. However, they weren’t the same. He was a fourth generation guardian, and she was an abomination, or rather, a vampire.

Unicorn and the Serpent… #bookboost #fightlikeagirl #warriorprincess

unicornandserpfinalIn the Unicorn and the Serpent the Morgan’s pagan society still has touches of magic. I wanted a fantasy, but not to heavy with the elements. Yes there is a glimpse of a unicorn. Morgan meets a dragon briefly, she also encounters little people. One who happens to be a blood relative. The story can be chalked up as a fantasy story. But it is also a romance and mystery.

It is a story of a young woman who has to believe in herself to save her people. This story started off as 12 pages and turned into this great tale. Morgan has become of favorite to me in so many ways. As we grapple with our own lives, what we have to overcome to be what we need to become.

I thought this book fit in well with the Lucky Leprechaun Hop. Check out my original post.

Blurb:

The appearance of a unicorn means a great change is coming.

Princess Morgan, wild and fiery, heir to her father’s throne, can best any man with a sword. Now grown she is fearful of being Queen. But when visitors from a different kingdom show up Morgan is faced with great changes as their easy life is turned upside down.

If scared away there is a Serpent nearby. The serpent means a great sadness.

One other change occurs as mysteries unravel themselves to her. Morgan’s own feelings towards one of her guards. Faced with loss, love and some touches of magic Morgan has to become the Queen she is meant to be or succumb to a life worse than death-servitude.

Excerpt

I sat in the chair and the girl tilted it back. What a treat. I hadn’t had my hair washed by someone else in years. It might even have been my prom, when Mom paid.

“Close your eyes. You don’t want to get soap in them.”

I shut my eyes. Then I settled into the chair and relaxed.

The music in the background was some kind of classical piano thing. Not normally my cup of tea, but it was relaxing, and I felt myself start to drift off.

The woman’s fingers moved through my hair while she ran warm water over my scalp. With the spray prickling my skin, she squeezed cool shampoo and stroked it into my hair. I could feel my breathing slow and I started to drift away.

“Hi,” I heard her say.

I didn’t hear a response, but she stopped massaging my scalp for a moment.

After a few seconds, she started again.

“Mmmmm. Relaxing.”

I started to shift my position, and she pushed my head back and began to rinse the shampoo out of my hair. After a moment, her hands squeegeed the water off the sides of my head, settling on my throat.

“That felt goo—”

She clamped down on my windpipe shutting off my air.

My eyes flew open. Standing there wasn’t the girl but a man I didn’t recognize.

I kicked and bucked in the chair as he continued to tighten his grip

I pulled a hand free and jammed my thumb in his eye and gouged. He yelped and slapped a hand over his damaged eye. Rolling out of the chair, I hit the linoleum floor and sprinted toward the door. He grabbed me from behind and spun me into the counter. As he bent me back, I kneed him between the legs.

“Ahggh.” His sour breath hit me in the face.

I clawed through the combs and brushes behind me on the counter looking for something, anything to defend myself. My fingers scraped across the handle of a pair of scissors. I kneed him again, and as he bent over I jammed the scissors in his arm. Jerking loose, I ran to the door and out to the street. Shit! My purse was still in the salon, but I had some money in my pocket and flagged down a cab.

I had him drop me at our hotel and called the police from the bell desk. I tried calling Jillian but she didn’t answer.

It only took Garza a couple of minutes to get there.

After I explained what happened, he escorted me back to the salon.

“This is the place.”

A short, stocky woman with black hair shot with gray and brilliant red lipstick stood behind a cash register.

I looked around. Two older women working on two even older women. No girl. No broken glass on the floor.

“Do you speak English?”

“Si, yes.”

“Where is the young girl?”

“Who?”

“The thin girl with the short hair.”

“No one like that works here.”

“She was here not more than an hour ago. I even left my purse here.” I ran to the back of the salon to the row of sinks. “Here. This sink.”

There was no purse, and my jacket was gone from the coat rack.

“We opened at nine. But I didn’t see you.”

“I didn’t see you either.”

She shrugged.

“Are you sure this is the place?” Garza asked. “There are many hair salons.”

Garza didn’t believe me.

“Just take me back to the hotel,” I said.

Now I had another problem. No purse meant no money, no credit cards and . . . worse, no passport or other identification.

EXCERPT

I knew my name, Maris, and that my mother worked as a prostitute in a famous brothel located in the Irish slums just outside of London, but I didn’t how I ended up in this unknown location.

Every thought about my mother started off the same. She tried to abort her pregnancy because it interfered with her ‘job.’ After my birth she kept me locked up in the corner of the room in the solid brass baby cradle that one of her clients gave her as payment. She tended to me as least as she could and when I was old enough to walk and understand what exactly was going on, she locked me inside her closet where I remained until sunrise.

With her death from cholera a year ago, I found myself forced to earn my way.  I had only two options: follow in her footsteps or leave the whorehouse to fend for myself. I pissed myself at the thought of trying to survive out there; in the world, all alone. At least I knew that I would have two hot meals, my mother’s old ragged bed, and a room of my own if I stayed.

I made a promise to myself. I would take over my mother’s client list. I would stay as long as I had to. I would save up as much money as I could and eventually leave for greener pastures. I struggled, though, as the years passed. Some of her clients enjoyed me while others couldn’t handle the fact that I, a post-puberty teenager, would submit myself to that line of work. But I did and there were nights that I wished I hadn’t. I had reached the midpoint of my savings goal when my life changed forever. I was almost there. I almost made it.

One night three large men with sharp teeth stormed into my room. I didn’t know who they were or what they wanted with me. One of them grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me violently against the wall, demanding that I tell him my name. When I answered his question with a question of my own, he smacked me, slicing the left side of my face. That was when things began to go from scary to downright crazy. He placed his mouth over my opened flesh and began to suck the blood from my wound. That was the last thing I remembered before I blacked out and awoke to three individuals—two females and one male—standing over me.

Excerpts

“It’s okay,” Carter soothed. He parked the car and hurried around, opened the door, and unhooked Alex from the seat belt. Then he pulled him out of the car and into his arms. He was shaking like a leaf. “There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Alex looked up at the building and shook in Carter’s arms. A car pulled in behind them, and Donald got out and strode over to where they were standing. “He’s mean,” Alex whispered as Donald stepped closer to them.

“No, he’s not. He’s just—” Carter smiled. “—grumpy.” He tickled Alex slightly, and Alex giggled and wrapped his arms around Carter’s neck.

“I’m professional, not grumpy,” Donald said and walked toward the front door of the hospital.

Carter followed along behind. “He is grumpy,” he said to Alex and walked inside.

Donald was already at the desk, and after a few minutes, he returned and motioned them to the chairs. “We need to wait, but it shouldn’t be long. I used your name as well.”

Carter looked at the woman behind the desk, and she smiled brightly at him. He sighed and sat down. Alex stayed on his lap, and Donald sat next to him. They didn’t talk, but every few minutes Donald shifted nervously. Carter kept his attention on Alex, but every few minutes he couldn’t help taking a peek at Donald in his suit and tie, all buttoned up.

Carter knew the exquisite body that lay hidden under those clothes. He and Donald had… well, they’d had a fling, a one-night stand that had ended up stretching out over an entire weekend a year earlier. It had been hot, sweaty, and Carter had thought well worth repeating as many times as possible, but obviously Icicle hadn’t. As soon as the weekend was over, Carter realized just why everyone referred to him as Ice, because Carter didn’t just get the cold shoulder; he’d had his nuts frozen off completely.

“You can go on through,” a nurse said when she came out to get them. Carter stood and followed her, still carrying Alex.

“I can take him. There’s no need for you to spend your entire evening here with him,” Donald said and carefully reached for Alex. He didn’t try to bite him again, but he most definitely was not happy, and after a few moments, he simply began to cry. Not whimpers, but out and out wailing, with tears of desperation.

“It’s all right. I’ll stay with him. Maybe he’ll calm down.” Alex practically jumped away from Donald and back into Carter’s arms. That seemed to settle things, and they walked together to an examining room.

Carter laid Alex on the bed and hoped he’d stay there. Thankfully it seemed comfortable enough, and Alex stayed still. Carter found the switch and dimmed the lights. Alex yawned, and Carter held his hand. Eventually the little guy fell asleep. “I have no idea how long he’s been awake.”

Blurb/Synopsis:

As former NSA, Dayton (Day) Ingram has national security chops and now works as a technical analyst for Scorpion. He longs for field work, and scuttling an attack gives his chance. He’s smart, multilingual, and a technological wizard. But his opportunity comes with a hitch—a partner, Knighton (Knight), who is a real mystery. Despite countless hours of research, Day can find nothing on the agent, including his first name!

Former Marine Knight crawled into a bottle after losing his family. After drying out, he’s offered one last chance: along with Day, stop a terrorist threat from the Yucatan. To get there without drawing suspicion, Day and Knight board a gay cruise, where the deeply closeted Day and equally closeted Knight must pose as a couple. Tensions run high as Knight communicates very little and Day bristles at Knight’s heavy-handed need for control.

But after drinking too much, Day and Knight wake up in bed. Together. As they near their destination, they must learn to trust and rely on each other to infiltrate the terrorist camp and neutralize the plot aimed at the US’s technological infrastructure, if they hope to have a life after the mission.  One that might include each other.

Excerpt

“Yeah, I know that, but it’s been two years. Don’t you think it’s time you took off the black dress and veil and went to purple at least?” Mark always had these sayings that rarely made sense. “It’s time you rejoined the living and stopped mourning.” Mark lifted his glass to his lips and sighed after taking a sip. “Damn, that’s good.” He sighed and then let his gaze wander back to Knight. “Kid, you need to get back to life or you’ll end up a grumpy old man before you’re forty.”

“Shit,” Knight sighed and drank from his tea. “That’s what Dayton called me today.”

“Who’s Dayton? Your partner in this mission?” Mark barely stopped long enough for Knight to nod. “Then that kid pegged you fast.” Mark seemed pleased about that… too pleased.

“What?”

“At least this Dayton isn’t going to take any of your crap. You need that.” Mark grinned, the small scar at the corner of his mouth showing. It was a souvenir he had gotten from a bar fight in Mexico when he’d rescued Knight after he’d done something stupid as a newbie. “Any partner that will let you walk all over them isn’t the partner you need.”

“You walked all over me,” Knight said.

Mark paused with his glass halfway to his lips. “Did I?” He raised his eyebrow slightly to the left, catching Knight in a whine without saying a word. “You were fresh out of the Marines and as gung ho as they came. Damn, you were scary as shit, always raring to shoot or blow shit up.” Mark smiled. “Came in handy in Ecuador, though.” He sipped his whiskey again, still grinning. “You needed a firm hand. Still do. Now, sometimes we end up with the partner we need and sometimes we end up with the partner we get. It’s up to you to decide which this is.”

“He’s the partner I got….” Knight gulped from his glass, the liquid coating his suddenly dry throat. “Just like I was the partner you got, and you were the partner I needed.”

“Are you sure about that, kid?” Mark expression was unreadable. “You sure we didn’t both get what we needed?” He downed the rest of his whiskey and signaled the waitress for another. “Don’t be too hard on this Dayton, but don’t go easy on him either. Fieldwork is fucking hard. Everyone thinks it’s excitement and glamor, but it’s really days of waiting surrounded by moments when shit happens.”

“Tell me about it. He’s so gung ho he’s probably spending the evening reading files and reviewing intercept transmissions.”

Mark stared at him. “That sounds smart to me. The question I have for you is, why aren’t you doing the same thing? It sounds like the kid is getting himself ready and doing the preparation you’d want a partner to do.” He lifted his glass to his lips but then sat it back on the table without taking a drink. “He may be new, but maybe the one who isn’t ready for this mission is you.” Mark folded his hands. “You never shirked on any mission we had. You pulled your weight and then some. That’s what he’s trying to do.”

That hit Knight like a punch in the gut. “Shit.”

“I ain’t saying you need to be a newbie about this. It’s your job to act as the seasoned pro. Help him along but don’t be an ass about it… well, not all the time. Asking you not to be an ass is like asking you not to breathe. But at least keep your assness to a minimum.”
